LAS CRUCES, N.M.—The University of Idaho soccer team’s season came to an end on Friday at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. For the third time in eight days Seattle U and Idaho met on the soccer pitch, unfortunately for the Vandals the result stayed the same. The No. 1 seeded Redhawks scored three goals in the first half and defeated No. 4 Idaho, 6-1, on Friday.

“We lost to the better team,” head coach Pete Showler said following the match. “Their movement caused us a lot of problems and we did not get it taken care of.”

Seattle U (15-2-2, 12-0-0 WAC) got its fair share of scoring chances in the first half, outshooting Idaho 13-0. Taylor Ritzman got the Redhawks on the board in the 25th minute off a pinball rebound off a free kick. Two minutes later Seattle U got its second goal off a corner kick from Kelly Beck, who bent the ball into the far side of the goal from the right corner.

Sophomore keeper Marina Siegl kept busy in the first half, getting credit for two saves and challenging Seattle U's shots left and righ.

Natasha Howe added a goal just before the end of the first half to take the 3-0 lead.

Idaho’s first shot came from Elexis Schlossarek in the 61 minute on a free kick from 35 yards out. Seattle U keeper Brianna Smallidge, juggled the shot trying to coral it by the left post before it went out of bounds. Idaho gained a bit of momentum and off a Seattle U foul, Schlossarek found Chelsie Breen from 40 yards out. Breen and the Seattle U keeper both challenged for the ball along the goal line. Breen out jumped the keeper, winning the challenge and getting Idaho on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute.

“I was happy with the second half,” Sholwer said. “We came out and played with a little bit more passion. We got a goal there which is always good for the morale. All credit to Seattle U. I wish them well.”

Idaho (4-16-0, 4-8-0 WAC) was led by Schlossarek, who totaled three of the team’s five shots. Siegl and Torell Stewart combined to make five saves.

Seattle U added second half goals from Howe, Stephanie Verdoia and Julia Moravec.
