Velasquez Named To Colombian Olympic Team

<p><a href="http://www.iuhoosiers.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/velasquez_orianica00.html">Orianica Velasquez</a>, who will be a senior on the Indiana University Women's Soccer team in the fall, was one of 18 players named to the Colombian National team that will represent the country in the 2012 Olympic Games in London later this month.</p>
<p>She will be the first women's soccer player from Indiana University to compete in the Olympic Games.</p>
<p>"I am thrilled to have been able to coach and continue to coach someone that has played in the World Cup and now has the opportunity to represent her home country in the Olympics in London," Indiana head coach <a href="http://www.iuhoosiers.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/lyon_mick00.html">Mick Lyon</a> said. "Ori is a very special player and person and to have that caliber of player at Indiana University is what it is all about. This has been a dream of hers from the very beginning and now she will be able to make it come true."</p>
<p>Colombia will play in Group G with the United States, France and North Korea. The full schedule for group play is listed below.</p>
<p>To prepare for the Olypmics, the Colombian team is slated to play exhibition matches against Canada (July 9), Cameroon (July 11), Brazil (July 14) and New Zealand (July 17) at various locations in Switzerland.</p>
<p>Velasquez, a native of Bogota, Colombia, has scored 19 goals, fifth-most in IU history, and has eight assists to her credit in her first three years with the Hoosiers. Last summer, she helped Colombia to an appearance in the World Cup and was named the "FIFA Player of the Match" against North Korea as Colombia earned its first-ever World Cup point with a draw.</p>
