Viens Ties Two School Records in 5-1 Win

September 6, 2019

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Sept. 6, 2019 – Senior striker Evelyne Viens (Canada) used a school-record tying four goals, along with teammate Sydny Nasello’s (Land O Lakes, Fla.) penalty kick, to power the No. 17 Bulls past Rice (receiving votes) in a 5-1 dominating victory in San Antonio on Friday night.

The Bulls (3-1) had not seen action in over a week due to a cancelled game from the effects of Hurricane Dorian, entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.Viens scored her first goal on an assist from Andrea Hauksdottir (Iceland) in the 29th minute, giving USF a slight edge at the break.

Rice (2-2) evened the score in the 51st minute, with Delaney Schultz converting on a corner kick. Viens then scored three consecutive unassisted goals in less than five minutes (60’, 61’, and 64’) to put away the game. In the 78thminute, Nasello powered in her penalty kick insurance goal and the Bulls stunned Rice with a 5-1 victory.

Viens’ hat trick is the third of her career, which ties the program record for most hat tricks in a career. It is her second double-brace of her career, the last coming in 2018, also in a game immediately following a game cancelled by a Hurricane. Her four goals in a game ties USF’s record for goals in a game, originally set in 1995 and now tied by Viens twice.

Quotable

Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on the win…

“The players were really calm and composed under the circumstances, even when we were up 1-0, or when we were tied 1-1. They were committed to the ideas we had practiced and they executed those to pull out the win.

I was proud that it was such a team effort, so many players were able to get in and play, and it feels like a solid group of players that support each other.”
