SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Freshman forward Mackenzie Bean scored a ninth-minute goal and junior goalkeeper Caitlin Plesemade five saves to lead the Portland State women's soccer team to a 1-1 road draw with San Francisco Friday at USF's home tournament at Negoesco Stadium.
 
It's the second straight 1-1 draw for the Vikings (1-0-2) this season, after they tied Boise State 1-1 at PSU's home tournament last Sunday. It's also the Vikings' second straight draw with the Dons (1-1-1), after the teams tied 0-0 last season at Hillsboro Stadium.
 
Friday's draw came as momentum shifted wildly within the match, as both teams controlled the match for long stretches.
 
"This was a great game for soccer fans," PSU head coach Laura Schott said. "The momentum swings and changes in the game were mostly due to two teams competing well in a hard-fought match."
 
Bean's goal helped the Vikings capture control of the match early, as sophomore midfielder Whitney Hilde found the freshman in the box after a deflection, giving Bean the opportunity to volley a shot into the net for her second goal of the season.
 
Bean's goal snapped a scoreless streak for the Vikings against the Dons, as the Dons had shut out the Vikings in their three previous matches against them. Portland State hadn't scored against the Dons since 1998, and the Vikings were facing another standout defensive front from the Dons Friday. USF goalkeeper Madalyn Schiffel, who was invited to the U.S. U-20 Women's National Team camp in the spring, was facing the Vikings again Friday after shutting out the Vikings in the 0-0 draw last season.
 
Bean's goal sparked a run of success for the Vikings against Schiffel and the USF defense, however, as the Vikings ran out to a 5-1 advantage in shots over the first 23 minutes of action. The Vikings forced Schiffel into making a pair of saves during that stretch, and earned three corners against the USF defense in the early going.
 
The match turned soon after that, though, as junior midfielder Emma Cooney's shot in the 23rd minute proved to be the Vikings' last in regulation. USF outshot the Vikings 7-0 in regulation after that, including a 5-0 advantage in the second half.
 
The Dons' lone goal came amidst a particularly strong stretch in the second half, as  midfielder Jaciara Mello found the ball off a deflection in the box in the 72nd minute and slotted a shot into the net off the right post. Mello's goal came after the Dons earned two corners in the preceding three minutes, and the Dons would force PSU's Plese into making two more saves in the five minutes afterwards.
 
Plese's second save after the goal came in the 79th minute, at which point USF was outshooting the Vikings 8-5, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
 
The Vikings held on to push the match into overtime, however, and they rediscovered their attack to record two early shots in the first overtime period. Junior forward Tamia Hasan recorded the Vikings' first shot in over 70 minutes of with a shot that went wide in the 94th minute, and sophomore midfielder Aurora Bodenhamer followed with a shot that was blocked in the 95th minute.
 
USF came back with the best scoring chance of the overtime period, though, as midfielder Sonja Giraud sent a shot off the post in the 98th minute. USF earned a corner soon after Giraud's shot, too, but the Viking defense kept the Dons out of the goal, and did not give up a shot to the Dons after that.
 
Hasan recorded the last shot of the match late in the second overtime period, as she sent a hard shot on goal with less than 50 seconds left in the match. Schiffel was there to save Hasan's shot for the Dons, however, and the teams ran out the clock from there.
 
Schiffel and Plese each played the whole match in goal for their respective sides, with Schiffel finishing with three saves to Plese's five. Plese's five saves are her most in a match since she saved 10 shots in a 2-0 win over Hawai'i on Sept. 15 last season. The match against USF was also the most extensive action of the season so far for Plese, as Plese had only played 24 minutes of the Vikings' match against Boise State before Friday.
 
Additionally, Friday's draw extends the Vikings' Big Sky-record unbeaten streak to 16 matches, and extends the team's streak of not allowing more than one goal in a match to 19 straight matches.
 
The Vikings' record streak will face its toughest test to date in the team's next match, as the Vikings play No. 21 California Sunday, Aug. 31 at 12 p.m. (PT). USF will host the match at Negoesco Stadium as part of the USF Tournament. Cal beat LIU Brooklyn 3-0 at the USF Tournament earlier Friday.
 
Match Notes: The Vikings are now 0-4-2 all-time against USF following Friday's draw…USF became the first team to outshoot the Vikings in a match this season, as they finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots…Friday's match is also the first time this season the Vikings have failed to record at least 10 shots in a match…The Vikings' match against California will be PSU head coach Laura Schott's second match against her alma mater in her coaching career…The Vikings' lost 1-0 to the then-ninth-ranked Golden Bears in 2009 in Schott's first match against her alma mater...Schott is still the all-time leading scorer in Cal history with 56 goals scored in her career.
