LUBBOCK, Texas — Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Plese made nine saves to put the Portland State women's soccer team on the verge of a road draw with No. 10 Texas Tech Sunday, but a 109th-minute goal for the Red Raiders gave Texas Tech a late, 1-0 win over the Vikings at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

Texas Tech midfielder Hannah Devine scored the golden goal for the Red Raiders just 88 seconds from the end of the second overtime period, as she headed a ball to the left post following a late corner kick.

The Vikings had been chasing their first-ever positive result against a top 10 opponent in the match against the Red Raiders, but fall to 0-6-0 against top 10 opponents after Devine's golden goal, as well as 0-10-0 against ranked opponents.

"The team played well today," PSU head coach Laura Schott said after the match. "We know we can play with a top 10 team after today's game. This should be helpful should we get to the NCAA Tournament."

Plese's nine saves helped the Vikings withstand a 28-10 shot disadvantage in the match, as the reigning Big Sky co-Goalkeeper of the Year bailed the Vikings out repeatedly during the match.

Plese made her first save less than two minutes into the match, as Texas Tech's Janine Beckie, a member of the U.S. U-20 Women's National Team, forced Plese to make a play early with a shot on goal.

Plese made five saves in the first half, overall, then followed with four saves in the second half to help the Vikings force overtime against the 10th-ranked Red Raiders.

The scariest moment for the Viking defense in regulation came in the 62nd minute, when Plese saved an initial shot from Texas Tech defender Jade Dapaah, only to have Devine redirect another shot on goal. Plese did not have time to recover from Dapaah's shot to put her in position to save Devine's, but another Viking was there to save the ball off the line.

The Viking offense, meanwhile,e had their own opportunities to score in regulation. Junior midfielder Emma Cooney fired a shot off the crossbar in the 15th minute, and the Vikings were unable to find the rebound after an awkward bounce. Additionally, freshmen Katie Forsee and Maddie Prehoda recorded shots on goal for the Vikings in the second half.

The Vikings were the ones on the front foot in the first overtime period, too, as they outshot the Red Raiders 4-2 in the period. The Vikings best chance to score in overtime came in the 97th minute, when senior midfielder Ariana Cooley followed a shot from junior forward Tamia Hasan that was blocked with her own shot on goal. Texas Tech goalkeeper Lauren Watson was in position for Cooley's quick follow, though, and kept the match tied at 0-0.

The Red Raiders then rediscovered their attack in the second overtime period, as they outshot the Vikings 3-0 in the period, including Devine's shot on her game winner.

The Vikings' performance against the Red Raiders should help give them confidence going forward, as they played even with the highly ranked Red Raiders a week after fading against another ranked opponent in a 5-0 loss to then-No. 21 California. The close loss to the Red Raiders also closes the Vikings' four-match road trip, as the Vikings will close out their non-conference schedule with home matches against Oregon and San Jose State over the next two weekends.

The Vikings host in-state rival Oregon Friday, Sept. 12, for their next match, which will kick off at 1 p.m. (PT) at Hillsboro Stadium.

Match Notes: The Vikings fall to 0-3-0 all-time against Texas Tech with Sunday's loss…The Vikings were facing a pair of 2014 Women's MAC Herman Trophy Watch List selections in their match against the Red Raiders, as Beckie and senior defender Jaelene Hinkle each earned the distinction during the preseason…Hinkle was also a 2013 third-team NSCAA All-American, and played for the U.S. U-23 Women's National Team in the spring.
