Wake Forest Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Winthrop, 1-0

September 25, 2011

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore forward Luca Gimenez found the back of the net in the 70thminute to lead the Wake Forest men’s soccer team past Winthrop 1-0 on Sunday, September 25 at Spry Stadium.

It was the sixth career goal, and first tally of 2011, for the Brazilian-born forward, who received a well-placed pass from Ross Tomaselli and drove it past Winthrop’s Patrick Walsh toward the near post.

“Ross played me an awesome ball, it’s hard not to score on a pass like that, so I give all the credit to him,” Gimenez said. “Tonight shows that one goal can win games for us and a win is what we needed. If that’s what it’s going to take, it’s good for us.”

Tomaselli earned his first career assist on the sequence and was helped by junior Luciano Delbono, who initiated the play from the midline and picked up his first helper of 2011.

Wake also kept an opponent scoreless for the second time this season as junior keeper Michael Lisch got credit for his first clean sheet victory. Lisch was called into action just twice as the backline held firm for the majority of the match. On defense, freshman Andrew Malkiewicz made the first start of his Deacon career and logged 62 minutes along with Danny Wenzel, Tolani Ibikunle, Sam Fink and Chris Duvall.

After a scoreless opening half which saw the Demon Deacons outshoot the Eagles 11-2, Wake continued to dominate possession in the second half. When the final buzzer sounded, the Deacs held a 25-6 advantage in shots and an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.

12 different players fired shots for the Deacs in the match as WFU improved to 2-0 all-time against Winthrop. Sunday’s meeting was the first between the schools since Nov. 12, 1980.

With the win, the Deacs improve to 3-4-1 overall and will return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 28 against Davidson for a 7:00 p.m. match at Spry Stadium.
