Wake Forest women defeat East Carolina

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Goals from Casey Luckhurst and Rachel Nuzzolese propelled No. 10 Wake Forest to a 2-1 road win over East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. Friday night. With her game-winning goal, Nuzzolese became the first player in school history to score in each of her first three games at Wake Forest.
The Deacons improve to 2-1 on the season while the Pirates fall to 1-2.
Luckhurst scored in the seventh minute to give the Demon Deacons a 1-0 advantage, and Nuzzolese made the score 2-0 with a strike in the 69th minute. Kimmy Cummings got a goal back for ECU in the 76th minute, but Wake Forest defended strong and held on for the victory.
The Demon Deacons outshot the Pirates 10-7 and held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Luckhurst led all players with four shots, while Kristen Meier and Bianca D’Agostino picked up assists for Wake Forest.
Wake Forest goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe made one save en route to earning the win.
Chrissy Gratz led East Carolina with three shots, and Christiane Cordero made four saves in net for the Pirates.
Wake Forest opened the scoring in the seventh minute when a long through ball from Kristen Meier put Casey Luckhurst one-on-one with the keeper, and the forward slid the ball past the goalie to put the Deacons ahead 1-0.
The Demon Deacons dominated possession in the opening period and put three shots on frame, but were unable to add to their tally.
In the 51st minute, Marisa Park got free on a breakaway after a defensive mishap, but her shot was saved by Cordero. Jackie Logue appeared to have scored on the rebound, but she was ruled offside.
The Pirates had a scoring chance in the 57th minute when Bledsoe was caught out of her goal, but the Deacon defense recovered and snuffed out the opportunity.
Katie Stengel made a long run on an individual effort in the 65th minute but her shot went wide.
Rachel Nuzzolese gave Wake Forest a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute when she took a short pass from Bianca D’Agostino at the top of the box and placed it into the top right corner of the goal.
The Pirates cut the Wake Forest lead to 2-1 in the 76th minute when the Deacons failed to clear a corner kick and Kimmy Cummings put the ball in the net from close range.
ECU almost tied the game in the 78th minute when Chrissy Gratz got past the Deacon defense and unleashed a shot but Bledsoe was able to deflect it wide.
The Pirates put pressure on Wake Forest as the clock ticked down, but the Deacons defended tenaciously to preserve the victory.
Wake Forest will be back in action when it hosts the ACC/SEC Challenge next weekend at Spry Stadium. The Deacons will face LSU at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 before taking on Kentucky on Sept. 5 at 2 p.m.
