Wake Forest women fall to Virginia
October 18, 2010
Katie Stengel scored her 13th goal of the season, setting new freshman records for goals and points, but Wake Forest fell 2-1 to No. 9 Virginia on Sunday at Klockner Stadium.
The Deacons fall to 10-5-1 (4-2-1 ACC) while the Cavaliers improve to 10-3-1 (4-2-0 ACC).
Virginia jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first half on goals from Meghan Lenczyk and Gloria Douglas, before Stengel pulled a goal back for the Deacons on a penalty kick just before the halftime break. The Deacs played the final 77 minutes of the game with a man advantage after Maggie Kistner was issued a red card in the 13th minute for a handball as the last defender but could not find the equalizer in the second half.
Stengel’s score gave her 13 goals, breaking the previous freshman record of 12 set by Liz Burnette in 1996, and 29 points, breaking the previous freshman record of 27 which was reached by Burnette in 1996 and Joline Charlton in 1999. Her 13 goals are the second-highest single-season total for a Wake Forest player behind Jill Hutchinson’s 14 goals last season.
Aubrey Bledsoe took the loss in goal, making six saves. Chantel Jones earned the win for Virginia with one save in 79:40 of action.
Emily Carollo, Sinead Farrelly and Kate Norbo recorded assists for the Cavaliers, who outshot the Deacons 12-7.
Meghan Lenczyk opened the scoring for Virginia in the 11th minute when she lofted a header that caught Bledsoe off her line and drifted just under the crossbar to put the Cavaliers up 1-0.
Virginia’s Maggie Kistner was shown a red card in the 13th minute for an apparent hand ball, leaving the Hoos a man down for the remainder of the match.
The Cavaliers had a chance to expand their lead in the 25th minute when Carollo had a shot from close range that prompted an excellent save from Bledsoe and Lenczyk’s follow-up attempt was blocked by Caralee Keppler.
Douglas gave the Hoos a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute when she took a pass from Norbo in the box and fired a shot past Bledsoe from 12 yards.
The Deacons tied the game in the 42nd minute on a penalty kick. India Winford made a strong run into the box and was taken down by Jones, the goal keeper. Stengel stepped up to the spot and knocked in the penalty to cut the Virginia lead to 2-1.
Bledsoe made several excellent saves to keep the Deacons in the game in the second half, but they were unable to find the tying goal.
Wake Forest will play its final three games of the season at home, beginning with a matchup with No. 6 Maryland on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
