IRVINE, Calif. – The ACC Champion Wake Forest women’s soccer team’s season came to an end Sunday as the Demon Deacons fell 2-0 to UC Irvine in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Anteater Field in Irvine, Calif.

Wake Forest finishes the year with a 13-8-3 record while UC Irvine improves to 19-2-2 and will continue on to play Washington in the third round.

Tanya Taylor struck early for the Anteaters in the 12th minute and CoCo Goodson added an insurance goal in the 71st minute. Playing their fifth game in 12 days, the Deacons had chances but were unable to score on UCI goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere. Wake was shut out for only the fourth time all season.

All four Wake Forest seniors, Amanda Barasha, Victoria Delbono, Bianca D’Agostino and Casey Luckhurst, saw action in the game.

Taylor’s goal came on the first shot of the game. She took the ball across the left side of the box and ripped a shot that deflected off of the back a Wake defender and into the net.

The Deacons had a chance to equalize in the 23rd minute. Marisa Park outhustled an Anteater defender to the end line and cut the ball into the box. She played a bouncing ball across to Katie Stengel who hit a volley that went straight to the UCI keeper.

In the 63rd minute, Amanda Howell played a lob over the top, sending Stengel on a breakaway. She tried to life the ball over the keeper but the shot went just wide.

Irvine’s final goal came in the 71st minute. The Anteaters put a free kick into the box that was cleared twice by Wake Forest, but Goodson found the ball at the top of the area and drove it home to give UCI a 2-0 lead.

Less than a minute later, Zuri Walker was shown a red card for a cynical tackle on Victoria Delbono leaving the Deacs with a man advantage for the final 20 minutes, but while they pushed forward, they were unable to find the back of the net.
