Wake Forest women play Virginia to draw

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – No. 5 Wake Forest and Virginia played 110 minutes of soccer, but neither side could find a goal as the two teams played to a scoreless tie on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.

The Demon Deacons move to 12-3-2 on the season and 4-2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Virginia is now 7-5-4 and 2-4-2 in conference play.

Wake Forest honored its seven-member senior class in a ceremony before the match. Caitlin Farrell, Kaley Fountain, Bess Harrington, Jill Hutchinson, Laura Morse, Allie Sadow and Sarah Winslow each earned a start in their final regular season match at Spry Stadium.

The match was a physical one as the two teams combined for 34 fouls. Virginia was called for 20 fouls, while Wake Forest was whistled for 14.

Wake Forest held a 12-9 advantage in shots, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Each team attempted six corner kicks in the match.

Amanda Barasha earned her sixth shutout in goal for Wake Forest. Barasha made two saves and saw her record move to 4-1-2 on the year.

Chantel Jones also earned a clean sheet for Virginia, making four saves and earning her sixth shutout of the year.

Hutchinson attempted a team-high four shots for Wake Forest. Ally Berry had three shots, including two shots that were on goal.

For Virginia, Sinead Farrelly took three shots, while Lauren Alwine had two shots.

The Cavaliers had a pair of scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. Farrelly and Lauren Alwine each had shots on frame in the third minute, but Barasha was able to make diving stops on both attempts.

Wake Forest had its first shot attempt in the 12th minute. Kristen Meier had a look from the top of the 18, but she sent her shot wide left.

The Demon Deacons had one of their best scoring chances of the first half in the 28th minute. Fountain played a cross from the left side of the field that found Hutchinson at the right side of the six-yard box. Hutchinson’s one-time shot was sent high of the goal to keep the game scoreless.

Virginia had a chance off a free kick in the 72nd minute. Colleen Flanagan sent a shot from 25 yards out that went just wide of the left post.

The Cavaliers nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 81st minute. Jess Rostedt played a pass to Alwine on the left side. Alwine sent a shot from 14 yards out just wide of the right post.

Wake Forest had a great scoring chance in the final minute of regulation. Fountain had an open look from the top of the 18, but her shot went right to Jones, who was able to make the save.

After a scoreless first overtime period, the Demon Deacons had a pair of scoring chances in the second extra period. A free kick from Barasha near midfield found the head of Alisha Woodson inside the 18. Woodson headed the ball to Logue, who sent a shot wide of the right post.

In the 106th minute, Hutchinson had a shot from the top of 18 that she sent just over the crossbar.

Each team’s attack was kept quiet in the final four minutes as the two sides finished the game with a scoreless tie.

Wake Forest closes the regular season next week with a pair of road games. The Deacs travel to Maryland on Thursday for 7 p.m. game, before finishing the regular season next Sunday at Boston College for a 1 p.m. match.
