Warahwks Push Unbeaten Streak to Eleven

November 2, 2014

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against UW-Oshkosh on Sunday, senior day, at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.  The tie pushes the Warhawks' unbeaten streak to eleven games and gives them the two-seed in the upcoming Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Titans earn the top spot and both teams will host semifinal matches on Wednesday. The winners will meet on Friday to determine the WIAC champion.

The wind played a major factor in Sunday's match, consistently blowing to the south at 15-20 miles per hour. The Warhawks were with the wind in the first half and capitalized in the 15th minute when a throw-in by Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) caromed in the direction of Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis. /Grafton) who kicked it past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. That was the only shot on goal of the game for UW-Whitewater.

After switching ends, the Titans used the wind to their advantage to score the equalizer in the 49th minute. A ball from Jakub Rys carried down the sideline and freshman midfielder Javier Simon tipped it past Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) to tie the game. UW-Oshkosh mustered only one other shot on goal in the game and Rohde made the save to preserve the tie.

Neither team had a quality opportunity in overtime, although the Warhawks did earn several corner kicks, they were unable to capitalize. The wind was such a neutralizing factor that both teams only fired five shots apiece. The Warahwks average 18.2 shots per game and the Titans 16.3.

UW-Whitewater, 12-3-4 overall and 2-0-2 in the WIAC, celebrated the careers of their nine seniors after the game. Rohde, Sam Kuchenreuther (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer), John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee), Ty McCoy (Batavia, Ill./Batavia), Ryan Reid (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah), Michael Montanye (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago), Kody Mjelde (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo), Dominic Pisciotti (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) and Xander Lien (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) all saw the field on Sunday, contributing to the tie.

Next up for the Warhawks is UW-Superior in the semifinals of the WIAC tournament. The Warhawks and Yellowjackets met back on October 18th coming away with a 3-3 draw. There will be no tie on Wednesday. The 6 pm game in Whitewater must have a winner; that winner will advance to the WIAC finals on Friday at a site to be determined.
