Wargo's Late Goal Lifts Scranton

September 23, 2014

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Freshman forward Samantha Wargo (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) scored in the 89th minute as The University of Scranton women’s soccer team stunned Muhlenberg for the second straight season with a 1-0 victory at Varsity Field.

Wargo scored with 88:44 on the clock to lift the Royals (4-3-1) to the victory, their third straight against Muhlenberg (6-1-1), which suffered its first loss of the season. Last year, the Royals shocked the Mules, 2-1 in overtime at Fitzpatrick Field, by scoring in the 89th minute to force overtime, then winning the match in the eighth minute of overtime.

This year’s match was an evenly played game for the first 88-plus minutes with both teams notching seven shots up to that point. Scranton’s eight shot made the difference, as Wargo gained control of the ball in the box and slipped a shot into the far corner to set off a celebration.

The goal was Wargo’s third of the season and marked the second straight game in which she scored, after notching the Royals’ only goal in a 1-1 draw with Farmingdale State on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Fitzpatrick Field. Wargo’s goal was just the third allowed by the Mules in eight matches this season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Krissy Welsh (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made four saves for her second shutout of the season.

Each team finished with two corner kicks, and Scranton held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Junior midfielder Ellen Walker (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and sophomore forward Christina Akalski (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) led the Royals with two shots apiece.

Scranton is back in action when it opens Landmark Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 27, on the road against Susquehanna at 3:30 p.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa.
