September 26, 2018

The Warhawks fall to 6-4-1 this season while Carthage improves to 5-2-2. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak the Warhawks had against the Lady Reds.

It took over eight minutes of play before either team could mount an attack.

The Warhawks earned a corner kick in the 9th minute that Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) struck towards the box. The ensuing header from Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) sailed wide of the net.

Carthage countered with shots in the 12th and 15th minutes, but neither was on goal and the match remained scoreless.

Boyd had an opportunity for a goal in the 19th minute but her shot hit the post and the rebound fell to the feet of Anna Brodjian (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) whose subsequent shot was blocked.

Senior forward Joanne Stanfa gave the Lady Reds a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute with her fourth goal of the season.

Savannah Curtis (Lodi, Wis./Lodi) registered the first shot on goal for the Warhawks in the 38th minute, but Sara Lieffrig was in position to make the save and keep UW-W off the scoreboard.

Carthage was determined to notch an insurance goal early in the second half, but junior goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) positioned herself to make four saves in the first 16 minutes of the second period.

UW-W had a pair of opportunities in the 83rd minute but shots by Boyd and Giana Rogala were stopped by Lieffrig.

Yonan tacked on two more saves in the final six minutes for a total of seven, but the Warhawks were unable to score and the match ended with a score of 1-0.

This was the second match of a three-game road trip. The Warhawks will open conference play on Saturday, September 29 when the travel to UW-Eau Claire for a match at 2 p.m.
