Washington women draw with Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. – After 88 minutes of physical, scoreless play, the Washington women’s soccer team looked like it finally pulled out another exciting road game with a goal in the 89th minute, but Cal-State Fullerton netted the equalizer with just eight seconds left in regulation and the teams settled for a 1-1 draw Sunday at Titan Stadium.
The Huskies won their first true road game of the season Friday in what was also their first overtime game in 2009, 3-2, over UC-Irvine on Nikki Murray’s golden goal. Murray looked like she would be the hero again on Sunday when she sent in a shot from 20 yards out with just a minute and a half left to give the Huskies (6-2-1) the late lead.
But with time winding down in regulation, Titan junior Tanya Slusser sent a corner kick into a mob on the back post where sophomore Caitlin Mellano somehow headed it back to the near post and Stacey Fox volleyed it home for her first score of the season.
The Huskies had three corner kicks and three shots in the two overtime periods but were unable to get their second consecutive golden goal.
The Huskies dominated the run of play in the match, outshooting the Titans by an 18-8 count and amassing 10 corner kicks to just one for Fullerton. Junior McKenna Waitley led the Huskies with five shots while Murray had four and sophomore Kate Deines and junior Veronica Perez tallied three each.
Davidson made one big play just before Murray’s goal to keep the game tied momentarily. Wth just over two minutes to play, Titan Brisa Gonzalez had a ball deflect off a Husky defender back toward the UW goal with only Davidson ahead of her. Gonzalez got to the 50-50 ball first and tried to loop a shot over the sophomore, but Davidson got a finger on it and collided with Gonzalez in the process, drawing a card just as both reached the top of the box.
Junior Danielle Bitonti then took a shot on the ensuing free kick, weaving a ball through traffic, but right into the arms of a diving Davidson to keep the match scoreless.
The senior Murray’s goal was her third of the season, giving her eight points on the season, both of which are second on the team. She came into the season with just one goal and four points in her first three years combined.
The Huskies return home next week for their final two non-conference games against Northwest foes, facing Gonzaga at 5 p.m. on Friday and Montana at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Both games will serve as the front end of a doubleheader with the UW men’s team, which plays its Pac-10 opener on Friday against San Diego State at 7 p.m. and faces UCLA on Sunday at 2 p.m.
