A heartbreaking double-overtime loss to Wittenberg capped off opening weekend for the Mount Union men's soccer team and its road won't get any easier in the coming days.

On Friday (Sept. 7), Mount Union kicks off Fred Myers-adidas Invitational (Delaware, Ohio) against Ohio Wesleyan, the defending national champions.  However, the Battling Bishops are off to a relatively slow start in 2012, tying Christopher Newport (Va.) 2-2 on Aug. 31 and dropping a 3-0 match to a talented Virginia Wesleyan squad on Sept. 1.  Sophomore Colton Bloecher and junior Taylor Rieger each scored a goal for the Battling Bishops in the season-opener.  Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Mount Union will meet Anderson (Ind.) for a 5 p.m. match on Saturday (Sept. 8) to wrap up the Fred Myers-adidas Invitational.  Anderson is 1-1 through its first two games and plays Ohio Northern tomorrow (Sept. 4).  The Ravens lost to Millikin, 2-0, to open 2012 but bounced back to beat Cincinnati Christian, 2-1, on Sept. 1.  Todd Canal and Ben McKenzie posted the two goals for Anderson in the victory over Cincinnati Christian.

Joey Trocchio (Ravenna/Rootstown), Chris Felker (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) and Clay Hicks (Leetonia/Cardinal Mooney) have eached scored one goal this season for the Purple Raiders, which knocked off Emory & Henry, 2-0, to begin the year.  Hicks, a freshman, tallied the only goal against Wittenberg.

Senior goalkeeper Jon Critell (Youngstown/Cardinal Mooney) posted the 17th shutout of his career - a Mount Union school record - in the Purple Raiders' win over Emory & Henry.
