KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman defense pushed its shutout streak to five, and junior Kristina Weishar notched her first collegiate multi-goal match, as the Bulldog women’s soccer team blanked Northwest Missouri State 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0 MIAA) quieted a Northwest (3-2-1, 1-1 MIAA) offense that had scored 19 goals in five matches to start the season, out-shooting the Bearcats 22-8 and 11-5 on net. Truman got on the board in the 30th minute when Melanie Hunt came off the bench and played a forward ball to Trisha Shoemaker. The junior forward turned it into a breakaway and beat the ’Cat keeper for a 1-0 lead. It marked Shoemaker’s fifth goal in six games.

Then, with just 22 seconds remaining before the half, Hunt played a corner kick into the box at the feet of Alexis Heffernan. Heffernan then found Weishar on the back post for her first of the season, as Truman took a 2-0 lead into the break.

After controlling play for the majority of the second half, the Bulldogs were rewarded again, as Shoemaker beat the Northwest defense and fired a shot that was blocked right to Weishar, who finished again for a 3-0 Truman margin.

While the Bulldog offense was in full force on the opposite end, Truman’s defense pushed its shutout streak to the 463 minute mark, recording a goose egg for the fifth straight match dating back to the team’s season-opener. Emily Bozdeck made five saves in net and dispatched of three Bearcat corners.

The Bulldogs sit in first place in the MIAA but hit the road for a pair of key matches next weekend, beginning on Friday (Sept. 21) night at nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos are 6-1 overall (1-0 MIAA) after suffering their first loss of the season on Sunday to non-conference foe Southwestern Oklahoma State.
