AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s University women’s soccer team opened the 2017 season Thursday with a 1-0 win over UC-Colorado Springs thanks to a goal from sophomore India Wentz.

After a scoreless first half, Wentz found the back of the net in the 46’. Sophomore Jenna Lipscomb took a shot that deflected off the crossbar, and Wentz took the rebound off her torso and found the back of the net to give SEU a 1-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions took four unanswered shots over the next nine minutes, but Hilltopper goalkeeper Ocoee Wilson held strong. The Mountain Lions added two more shots in the final 36 minutes of play, but failed to find the goal.

St. Edward’s looked to extend its lead with four second-half opportunities, but could not convert. Mountain Lion goalkeeper Grace Ramsden maintained the final margin with back-to-back saves in the final five minutes.

·       Wentz finished the game with three shots to go along with her goal.

·       Kelly Andrus, Viktoria Malmros and Katherine Whitman all recorded shots on goal for SEU.

·       Whyntneigh Duffie rounded out St. Edward’s shot total with her first strike of the season.

8 – Saves by Wilson to claim the first clean sheet of her career.

44 – The Hilltoppers shots on-goal percentage as they put four of their nine attempts on target.

Head Coach Nick Cowell on the game…

“We have a lot of growth to go with this team. Sometimes it takes just one goal and we hung on there at the end. Overall, not a very good performance, but I’m happy with the fact they hung in there and won the game.”

Head Coach Nick Cowell on the play of Ocoee Wilson…

“Ocoee showed today why she’s become a starter on our team – she’s very athletic, she’s good at one-on-ones and her handling was very sure today. I’m really happy with her progress. We tell our keepers not to worry about the great saves, just don’t make any stupid mistakes.”

The Hilltoppers host MSU Denver Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lewis-Chen Family Field on The Hilltop. Live stats and video will be available at GoHilltoppers.com.
