Wheeler’s OT Goal Sends Panthers Past No. 22 Timberwolves

October 1, 2011
COLUMBUS, Ohio - With less than four minutes left in the final overtime, junior Justin Wheeler (Gahanna, OH) lifted Ohio Dominican''s men''s soccer team to its second home win over a ranked opponent in 12 days as the Panthers knocked off No. 22 and previously unbeaten Northwood (Mich.) Tuesday evening. Junior Andrew Edler (Hilliard, OH) got the scoring sequence started with a short pass along the top of the box to classmate Colby Catlett (Hilliard, OH) who touched it ahead to a charging Wheeler who beat the keeper with a straight on shot to the lower left corner from seven yards away. With its first overtime win in four tries this year, ODU improves to 4-2-1 overall and moves ahead of Northwood in the GLIAC standings at 3-1-1, while the Timberwolves fall to 5-1-0 and 3-1-0 in the conference. Jeremy Klepal opened the game''s scoring with a point blank shot off a cross through traffic from the right end line at the 43:38 mark of the first half to give Northwood the 1-0 lead. The Panthers countered with the equalizer in the 66th minute as senior Felix Darko (Reynoldsburg, OH) passed off the ball from the left corner of the box to Catlett who blasted it straight on to the upper right 90 from 15 yards deep for his team-leading fourth score of the year. Northwood had a 13-11 edge on shots, but more importantly, the Panthers finished with a 7-3 margin on shots on goal. Sophomore Dean Dziewit (Waterford, MI) picked up win number four in goal with two saves in 106:18 minutes of action. ODU steps out of conference this Friday, Sept. 30 as preseason No. 10 Charleston (W. Va.) visits Panther Field for a 7 p.m. clash. Contact: Bryan Desch deschb@ohiodominican.edu
