Wichman Named Iowa State Assistant
July 18, 2012

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head soccer coach Wendy Dillinger announced the hiring of Des Moines native Jason Wichman as an assistant coach Monday. Wichman comes to Iowa State after coaching for a year at Texas State and three years at Drake. He trained the goalkeepers at both Texas State and Drake.

Wichman helped guide Texas State to the 2011 Southland Conference tournament title, a program-record-tying 14 wins and a berth in the NCAA Championship tournament. The 2011 Bobcats had a streak of 14 matches without allowing multiple goals and posted nine shutouts. Texas State shutout Stephen F. Austin in the Southland Conference tournament final despite the Lumberjacks entering the match as the nation’s top-ranked offense. Texas State’s goalkeeper Lauren Frazier was named the Southland Conference tournament MVP.

“I am really excited about Jason joining our staff,” Dillinger said. “With the success he had at Texas State, especially with the defense and goalkeepers, I think he will make an instant impact at Iowa State. (Texas State head coach) Kat Conner spoke highly of Jason’s professionalism, commitment and passion to the game. We are excited to bring home an Iowa native and look forward to him being a Cyclone.”

Prior to Texas State, Wichman saw Drake have its first 10-win season in four years in 2010 and a program-record-tying nine shutouts. Wichman coached Drake goalkeeper Kalena Litch to a program-record nine shutouts during the 2010 campaign.

“I am extremely excited to be coming back to Iowa and to be a part of the Cyclone Nation,” Wichman said. “I had a great learning experience this past year at Texas State, and I am looking forward to coaching in the Big 12. Coach Dillinger is doing great things, and I can't wait to start working with these elite student-athletes and representing Iowa State University.”

Wichman has extensive experience training goalkeepers, a role he served at his stops at Texas State, Drake, Simpson College (2006-07), Waukee High School (2007-08) and Iowa City West High School (2006).

Wichman graduated from Simpson College in 2004 and has also earned his NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma and NSCAA National Diploma.
