Wilhelm Powers Huskies to 3-0 Win

August 27, 2017

ORONO, Maine -- Led by a two-goal effort from senior Carly Wilhelm, the Northeastern women's soccer team (3-1-0) knocked off the Maine Black Bears (0-2-1) in a 3-0 road win.

Wilhelm scored twice in the first half after she came off the bench as a substitute. Her goals came only 3:15 apart and quickly turned a 0-0 game into a comfortable 2-0 lead. Senior Kayla Cappuzzo added Northeastern's third goal to ensure the win.

The Huskies dominated Maine defensively throughout the game. They limited the Black Bears to only three shots on goal and only five attempts overall. Freshman Julianne Ross played the full 90 minutes on the back line. Junior Eve Goulet chipped in 77 minutes on defense and sophomore Olivia Ware contributed 73 minutes of shut-down play.

After returning to the lineup on Thursday against Boston University, junior Valentina Soares Gache played 58 minutes against Maine and sent two shots on goal. Freshman Katarina Nilsson made her Husky debut in the win as she played 30 minutes and had one shot on net. Freshman Sophia Thompson also saw her first bit of playing time as she came in for 17 minutes.

Goal Recaps

  • In the 26th minute, Lizzie George opened up some space for Wilhelm in front of the goal. Wilhelm looked down the keeper in a 1-on-1 and snuck a shot inside the post to give the Huskies a 1-0 edge.
  • Wilhelm doubled her luck in the 29th minute with another goal. She took a shot in the box that deflected off the defense and over the keeper's head for the tally.
  • In the second half, Kayla Cappuzzo controlled the ball on the wing before sending a cross into the box. No Husky made contact with the ball, but a Maine defender guided the ball into her own net.

Northeastern returns to Parsons Field on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. game against Harvard.
