Box Score

The College received goals from seven different players on Wednesday night. Headlining the Tribe’s effort was senior Andrew Hoxie, who finished with a goal and two assists. Both senior Price Thomas and junior Ian Stowe finished with a goal and an assist. Junior goalkeeper Andrew McAdams and sophomore Colin Smolinksy each had a save and combined to register the shutout.

In the first half, the Tribe wasted little time getting on the board and putting Richmond on the defensive. The College would score three times in a little more than three minutes.

In the 14th minute, the College got its scoring started on a breakaway. Hoxie got the ball past the Spiders’ defense with just one defender with him. Hoxie found a wide-open Price Thomas on the left side, who finished from just inside the box, giving the College a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, the Tribe was on the attack once more. Junior Nat Baako drew the defense, running across the top of the box to the right. As he drew the defenders, Baako left a great ball for senior Roger Bothe around the box. Bothe crushed a shot with his left foot, beating the keeper in the upper-left corner. Bothe’s first goal of the season gave the College a 2-0 advantage.

William and Mary kept the scoring coming, when just one minute later Hoxie was fouled by a Richmond player around the top right of the box, drawing a penalty kick. Hoxie took the penalty kick, finishing to the right, and increasing the Tribe’s lead to 3-0.

At halftime, the Tribe was thoroughly in control of the match, leading 3-0. In the first frame, the College out-shot the Spiders, 10-3, with W&M getting six shots on-goal to Richmond’s one.

In the second half, the Tribe continued to control the pace of play and was able to take advantage of its offensive opportunities.

Junior Alan Koger got the College’s second half scoring started in the 49th minute when he finished a beautiful cross from Price Thomas, heading the ball into the net and pushing the Tribe’s advantage to 4-0.

One minute later the scoring continued when, off a shot from Hoxie, Stowe hammered home the rebound just inside the left post. Stowe’s second goal of the season gave the College a 5-0 lead.

In the 64th minute, senior Preston Whitlock scored the first goal of his career. Whitlock was pressing the offense, and off a lofted ball from Stowe, Whitlock finished with his head, adding to the College’s lead.

The final score of the day for the Tribe came off the foot of junior Jimmy Carroll, who after some great passing from junior Ryan Snyder and sophomore Stephen Laws, made a great move and beat the keeper just inside the left post. The first goal of Carroll’s career gave the Tribe its winning margin of 7-0.

For the match, the College out-shot the Spiders, 21-6, with a total of 12 shots from the Tribe going on frame to Richmond’s two. In the loss, Richmond goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson made five saves.

The Tribe’s seven goals on Wednesday night is the most the College has scored since the 2005 season opener. On September 3, 2005, the Tribe defeated Saint Joseph’s by a score of 8-0 in Williamsburg. In total, the Tribe has scored seven or more goals on 28 occasions in the history of the program.

The William and Mary Tribe will open up Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday, September 26 when the College travels to take on Towson. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
