William & Mary women beat Loyola (MD)

Williamsburg, Va. - The #16-ranked William & Mary(w) Tribe women’s soccer team took it to the Loyola on Friday night, beating the Greyhounds, 5-0, at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field. With the victory, the Tribe improves to 3-0-1, while Loyola falls to 1-3.

Sophomore Mallory Schaffer had a career night, scoring a pair of goals and tallying two assists. Not to be outdone, classmate Cortlyn Bristol also netted two scores, while senior Kaitlyn O’Connor scored her second goal of the season. Freshman Audrey Barry dished out two assists on the night, while senior Emily DeNardis notched her first career assist.

In the first half on Friday, the Tribe played well, connecting well and taking the offense to the Greyhounds. The Tribe had numerous chances on goal, but was unable to get on the board until late in the first frame.

The Tribe was on the attack in the 36th minute, with Barry holding the ball on the right side of the box for the Green and Gold. Barry beat two defenders, entering the box and feeding Schaffer from the right side. Off the great pass, Schaffer fired a shot from 20 yards into the right corner of the net, beating the Loyola keeper. Schaffer’s first goal of the season gave the College a 1-0 lead entering halftime.

In an offensive first half, the Tribe out-shot Loyola, 12-9, with the College getting six shot on goal to the Greyhounds three. In goal, Yount registered three saves for the Tribe, while the Greyhound keepers combined to make five.

In the second half, the Tribe put the game out of reach, putting on an offensive clinic. In the 53rd minute, Bristol found herself open after a nice combination pass from Schaffer and Barry. Bristol didn’t waste the opportunity, beating the Loyola goalie after receiving the nice cross, giving the Tribe a 2-0 lead.

Just over four minutes later, Barry was once again on the attack for the Green and Gold. Barry beat her defender in the box, but was dragged down before firing a shot, drawing a foul. O’Connor stepped up to take the penalty kick for the Tribe, beating the keeper to the right, making the College’s advantage, 3-0.

The Tribe continued its scoring onslaught in the 72nd minute, when Bristol took a great pass from Schaffer. Bristol cut left into the box after the great feed, and after a fake, beat the Greyhounds’ goalie to the right. Bristol’s second goal of the night gave the Green and Gold a 4-0 lead.

W&M capped its scoring in the 81st minute when after a great pass from DeNardis, Schaffer took the pass in the box and struck it past the goalie on the left, notching her second goal of the match and giving the Tribe its’ winning margin of 5-0.

For the match, the College out-shot Loyola, 24-15, with the Tribe getting an impressive 14 shots on goal to the Greyhounds’ four. In goal, Yount and senior Grace Barnard combined to notch the College’s third shutout of the season.

The Tribe’s wining margin of five goals on Friday night was the widest margin for the Green and Gold since 2008, when W&M defeated Akron, 6-0, in Williamsburg.

The #16 William and Mary Tribe women’s soccer team will be in action on Sunday, September 5 when it takes on in-state rival Richmond. Kickoff at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
