ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women’s soccer team suffered a 4-1 setback to the Campbell Camels on Saturday evening at Eagle Field.

The Eagles fall to 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play, while the Camels improve to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in Big South action.

“You have to give Campbell a lot of credit tonight,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “I thought they played very well and took advantage of our mistakes. Overall I think this is a good learning game for our team. What we need to do now is move on and tried to get prepared for our next match. I think our girls learned a lot tonight and hopefully we will be prepared for High Point.”

Campbell got on the scoreboard first in the 25^th minute on Kirsty Meyer’s fourth goal of the season. She scored on a header after the Camels corner kick from the near side deflected off a Winthrop player. Pirjo Leppikangas extended Campbell’s lead to 2-0 in the 29^th minute on a through pass from Ashley Clark. Clark received a pass from Hilliary Gupton just outside the 18-yard box far side, and immediately made pass to Leppikangas across the box to the near post.

The Camels went ahead 3-0 in the 61^st minute after Clark beat Eagle goalie Sarah Schippers one-on-one after header pass from Meyer.

Courtney Durbin trimmed Winthrop’s deficit to 3-1 in the 86^th minute after her shot from 20-yards out hit off a Campbell player and went just out of the reach of goalkeeper Ryann Torrero and into the far side of the net. The goal by Durbin was her fifth of the year.

Michelle Procaccini’s second goal of the season for the Camels made it a 4-1 contest in the 90^th minute of play. The initial clear by Schippers went right to Procaccini who immediately took a shot from 35-yards out and put it over the head of Schippers, who had come out of the box to make the clear.

Campbell outshot the Eagles 17-16 in the contest, while both teams attempted six shots on-goal. The Camels also held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Krystyna Freda took a team-high six shots for Winthrop, and Schippers finished with two saves. Clark led Campbell offensively with five shots, while Torrero snagged five saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 6 with a 7 p.m. home matchup against the High Point Panthers.
