Winthrop’s Season Comes To An End With 3-2 Loss To No. 3 Campbell

CHARLESTON, SC – The 2011 season for the Winthrop women’s soccer team came to an end on Friday evening with a 3-2 defeat to the third-seeded Campbell Camels at Blackbaud Stadium.
The Eagles finish the season with a 12-7-1 overall record, while the Camels improve to 15-4-2 on the year. The 12 regular season wins are the second-most in program history.
"I was proud of our effort tonight,” said head coach Spencer Smith. “I thought we played very hard. I felt Campbell was very good too and congratulations to them on the victory."
Winthrop came out in the first 12 minutes of the opening half and put pressure on the Campbell defense with three scoring opportunities from within 25 yards. Lia Gorden appeared to give the Eagles the first goal of the contest in the 5th minute after scoring right side on a through ball by Courtney Durbin, but was ruled offsides halfway onto the Camels side of the field.
Courtney Durbin’s 11th goal of the season put Winthrop ahead 1-0 in the 7th minute with the assist coming from Grace Radler. Radler had the ball 30 yards out on the far side of the field and put the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box right to Durbin, who fought off a Campbell defender and scored right side past goalkeeper Ryan Torrero.
The Eagles looked to add to their advantage in the 11th minute on a shot from 25 yards out near side by Rachel Webster. Her shot went over the head of a leaping Torrero far side, but the ball hit off the left post and rolled along the goal line before being cleared out by a Camel player.
Campbell would tie the contest up at 1-1 in the 32nd minute on a penalty kick by Annabelle Gibney. The Camels were awarded the penalty kick after a penalty was called on Winthrop inside the six-yard box off a cross far side.
A header by Pirjo Leppikangas in the 41st minute gave Campbell a 2-1 lead as she headed the ball into the net near side off a corner kick from Gibney.
The Camels outshot the Eagles 10-8 in the opening half, while both teams attempted five shots on-goal each. Campbell also took four corner kicks to Winthrop’s one. Durbin had three shots for the Eagles, and Schippers snagged three saves. Ashley Clark posted three shots for the Camels, while Torrero had four saves.
Clark extended Campbell’s lead to 3-1 in the 60th minute off her left-footed shot from several yards outside the 18-yard box. She gained possession of the ball after a deflection from a Winthrop player, and wasted little time putting her shot from the middle of the field past Schippers.
The Eagles trimmed their deficit to 3-2 in the 63rd minute on Allie VandeWater’s second goal of the season. She played the ball near side 19 yards out on a through pass from Ariel Kunde. VandeWater was wide open for the pass and put her one-timer back across the box past Torrero into the lower right corner of the net.
The Camels finished the match with a 20-16 advantage in shots and 11-8 in attempts on-net. Campbell also led in corner kicks 9-1.
Durbin led the Winthrop offense with four shots, while Schippers grabbed eight saves. Clark took a team-high six shots for the Camels, and Torrero had six saves.
