Wolfpack and Tribe Play to 1-1 Draw

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite controlling the match and outshooting the hosts by a final count of 20-10, the NC State men’s soccer team (2-1-1) was held to a 1-1 draw in double overtime at William & Mary (0-2-1) Tuesday evening inside Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.

 

The Wolfpack generated two terrific chances to win the match during the overtime periods. Tyler Gabarra redirected a cross on target from very close range that was saved by William & Mary goalkeeper Kieran Baskett in the 98th minute and Gabriel Machado beat Baskett in the 109th minute, but his shot pinged squarely off the left post.

 

Baskett finished the match with seven saves on an evening when the Wolfpack doubled up the Tribe in shots on target (8-4) and more than doubled its opponent in corner kicks earned (9-4).

 

Postgame Notes

-NC State leads the series with William & Mary 5-4-1.  

-Freshman defender Kendall Edwards made his first career start in Tuesday’s match.

 

Junior midfielder David Loera broke open the scoring in the 81st minute, receiving a pass from teammate Jamie Smith before beating three defenders and hitting a strike over Baskett and into the back of the net for his fifth career goal.

 

William & Mary answered two minutes and two seconds later, equalizing in the 84th minute when Cole Smith scored inside the near post on a first-time strike following a cross from teammate Julian Ngoh.

 

NC State returns to action at home on Saturday, Sept. 14 when Boston College comes to Raleigh. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Eagles is scheduled for 7 pm from Dail Soccer Stadium. Live streaming coverage of the Wolfpack’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener will be provided by ACCNX.
