Women Complete Round 2 of NCAA Tourney
Friday night brought 16 matches with a few major surprises and a lot of close matches as the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament continued along toward its mission of crowning a national champion for 2011.
Probably the most notable result of the day’s action was national #2 UCLA being upset at home by the University of San Diego Toreros via post-match penalty kicks. USD went on top early when Mariah Butera scored in just the 2nd minute after taking a cross from Stephanie Ochs, but Jenna Richmond scored late in regulation to send the match into overtime.
After 20 minutes of scoreless play, the match went to penalties where the Toreros grabbed the upset victory. Elissa Magracia scored the decisive spot kick, and USD goalkeeper Courtney Parsons made 4 saves out of 6 attempts to help the Toreros to their 2nd consecutive PK win in this year’s tournament.
Also in that bracket, Lori Walker’s Ohio State Buckeyes defeated Milwaukee 2-1. Paige Maxwell scored a fantastic individual goal in the 2nd half to break a scoreless deadlock. Caitlyn Martin then added some insurance in the late going. This proved vital as Milwaukee’s Sarah Hagen scored on a free kick in the closing minute. This seemed fitting as Hagen has spent the rest of her career at UWM putting the ball in the back on the net, and Friday’s deflected strike made it a career total of 93 goals for the senior.
The Buckeyes will play Sunday at Duke, a 3-1 winner over Georgia. The Blue Devils scored on an own goal in the 1st half and then from Laura Weinberg and Kaitlyn Kerr in the 2nd half before Nicole Locandro pulled one back for Georgia.
An upset result saw 2nd-seeded Florida dropping a match at home to in-state rivals UCF. Madison Barney scored the opener for the Golden Knights, but Tahnai Annis equalized for Becky Burleigh’s Gators in the 24th minute. Kristina Trujic put UCF up 2-1 before halftime and then Nicolette Radovcic scored in the 72nd minute to make it 3-1 for UCF. Annie Speese tallied for the Gators in the 85th minute, but UCF held on for the upset win.
UCF will now play North Carolina, who powered past Baylor 5-0. The Tar Heels got 1st half goals from Kelly Macfarlane, Megan Brigman and Elizabeth Burchenal to kill the match off early. Emmalie Pfankuch, also scored.
Also in that section of the bracket, Penn State got two late goals from Maya Hayes to kill off a close match and defeat Marquette 4-1. Emily Hurd and Emma Thomson scored to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 halftime lead, but Kerry McBride pulled Marquette to within one before Hayes’ scoring finished things off. Penn State will play Sunday at Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons broke open a tight battle with Boston University via 2nd half goals from Jackie Logue and Katie Stengel.
Another upset saw third-seeded Texas A&M falling to ACC side Virginia Tech, 3-1. First half goals from Brittany Popko and Kelly Conheeny put the Hokies up 2-0, and Shannon Mayrose’s 71st minute tally iced the game for Chugger Adari’s team. Megan Streight pulled a goal back for the freshman-laden Aggies.
The Hokies will now play in-state and ACC rivals Virginia, on the Cavaliers’ home field. UVA jumped on Washington State early with 1st-half goals from Lauren Alwine and Gloria Douglas. Caroline Miller killed the match with a 58th minute tally to provide the final scoreline of 3-0, and the Virginia defense and midfield held the Cougars to just one shot attempted for the match.
The other two winners from that section of the bracket were Florida State and Louisville. The Seminoles scored twice in the opening 16 minutes en route to a 3-1 win over Portland. Janice Cayman and Dagny Brynjarsdottir got Mark Krikorian’s team going with early goals. Kristin Grubka made it 3-0 in the 2nd half before Taylor Brooke scored a consolation goal for the Pilots. The Cardinals beat Memphis on the Tigers’ home ground, breaking open a scoreless draw in the 2nd half with goals from Kim Sharon and Zakiya Mcintosh. Chloe Kiefer earned the shutout in goal for Louisville, recording 4 saves on the evening.
In other results, Maryland got a 70th minute goal from Becky Kaplan and Yewande Balogun recorded a shutout in goal as the Terrapins defeated Auburn 1-0. The Terps will face Big 12 champions Oklahoma State, who defeated Illinois 1-0 at home. Annika Niemeier scored the 1st half winner on assists from Krista Lopez and Megan Marchesano, while Adrianna Franch recorded a 6-save shutout in goal for the Cowgirls.
Also in that part of the bracket is consensus #1 Stanford, the overwhelming favorite to win the tournament. Paul Ratcliffe’s squad did nothing to dispel that notion with a 2-0 win at home over South Carolina. Mariah Nogueira put the Cardinal on top in the first half and Taylor McCann added a tally in the 2nd half, with Emily Oliver presiding in goal for Stanford. The Cardinal will now face Boston College, who bested California on penalties 3-1 after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. Jillian Mastroanni presided in goal for the Eagles in the shutout and penalties, while Mary Gibson Wagner delivered the decisive spot kick for Allison Foley’s team.
