Women’s Soccer Blanks Furman 1-0

September 17, 2011

Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team scored early and relied on a career-high 14 saves from junior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes in picking up a 1-0 victory over Furman University on Friday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton.

Junior forward Allison Griffin was at the right spot in the right time to put the Owls on top in the 14th minute.  After a touch pass from redshirt junior midfielder Meghan Brown, Griffin found herself past the Paladin defensive for an open goal.  The Palm Bay native has scored twice this season – in what ended up being the game winner.

“I went hard into the box after Meghan flicked the ball over the defense.  I was able to finish the scoring opportunity and help the team,” said Griffin.

Despite being outshot 24-7 in the match, the Owls remained composed in the defensive line.  Lantes made seven saves in each period to record her third shutout of the season.  The 14 saves beat her previous best of 12 saves against the University of Arkansas in 2009.

“We were able to dig down deep today.  We were absorbing enormous pressure but found a way to finish the game and get a good home win,” said Dooley.  “This wasn’t pretty but you are never going to turn away 1-0 victories.”

Sophomore forward Jesse Shugg tallied four of the team’s seven shots, including one on goal.  Sophomore midfielder Marisa Russo, sophomore forward Brittney Nash and Griffin each had one shot.

FAU has recorded a shutout in three of its five home matches this season.

The Owls improve to 4-3 on the season with the victory and records its first winning non-conference record since 2005.  The team will travel to Arkansas State University on Friday, September 23 to begin Sun Belt Conference action.  Furman drops to 4-4 on the fall campaign.
