Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The Knights made it a perfect 2-0 by winning the rubber match of the Mercy Kickoff Classic with a 1-0 blanking of Post on Sunday in Dobbs Ferry, New York.  The Knights defeated Pace on Friday to open the tournament.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, as defense dominated the play early in the first half.  Neither side had prime scoring chances in the first 45 minutes of play, as both sides would maintain possession in the midfield, but couldn’t finish on the offensive end.  For the Knights, Rebecca Laporte was controlling pace of play in the midfield .

Second half, the Knights pushed play on the offensive end and were soon rewarded for their dilligence.  In the 49th minute off a corner, possession was fought for and won by Nicolette Scrozzo.  She got the ball to Lorena Russi at the penalty spot .  Russi let go a shot that was deflected by goalie, Grace McConnell, but ended up in the back of the net, giving Queens a 1-0 lead.

In the 54th minute, the Eagles’ Sylvia Yanez stole the ball and made a run at the 18-yard box.  From there, she took a shot to Mersina Onesto’s right that forced her to make the save and keep QC ahead 1-0.  Post continued to press the offensive.

Just past the one-hour mark, Post’s Valerie Moore took in the ball off a deflection and blasted a shot that hit the top right of the crossbar and fell to safety.  QC maintained the 1-0 advantage.

With the victory, Queens improved to 2-0 on the season and swept both games in the Mercy Kickoff Classic.  Russi collected a game-high three shots; while Mersina Onesto recorded her second clean sheet of the season. The Knights return to action on Wednesday, September 11, when they host Adelphi at 4:00 PM.
