Garden City, N.Y. - The women's soccer team took on the Chargers of New Haven in a battle of the third place teams of the Northeast-10. In a scoreless first, it took just one goal to determine the winner of the game and it came off the foot of Adelphi's Victoria Antonino in the 47^th minute. With the win, the Panthers bump up to 8-1-2, 6-1-2 NE-10 while New Haven moves to 7-3-2, 5-3-2 NE-10.
 
The first half featured minimal action with Adelphi controlling the ball for the majority of the 45 minutes. The Brown and Gold managed to get off six shots with three of them on the mark. Perhaps their closest opportunity came in the latter stages of the half in the 40th minute when a New Haven foul set up a free kick for the Panthers. Taken by Donna Liotine from 25 yards out just off the right corner of the box, she caught the visitor defense off guard and quickly took the kick and sent it in where Kelsey Malles' header wound up going wide left of the net.
 
New Haven had their best chance in the 44th minute when Nicole Pacapelli created some room from the attacking left corner of the 18 and launched a shot that sailed just high over the net.
 
However, the Brown and Gold wasted no time getting on the board as it took just 78 seconds into the second for them to net the go-ahead goal. On a corner from Melissa Duarte, Michelle Brown received the long pass and found Victoria Antonino who put it passed New Haven Goalkeeper Moriah Saidel for the 1-0 lead.
 
New Haven turned their offense up a notch and became more aggressive, attacking the net and creating opportunities. In the 56th minute, the Chargers threatened when Danielle Widmann broke away on the right side and penetrated deep into Panther territory, but her attempt was squashed by an athletic Sam Whitney save. In a matter of 16 minutes, the visitors managed six shots and put half on goal, but Whitney remained solid and kept the Chargers at bay.
 
The Panthers calmed New Haven's offensive barrage and leveled the playing field with possession staying mainly at midfield. The visitors, after their six initial shots in the early stages of the second, managed another seven in the remainder of the final 45 minutes to bring their shot total to 15.
 
Meanwhile, the one goal the Panthers scored in the second wound up being their only shot in the half. They registered just eight shots throughout the game and were at a 4-2 disadvantage on corner kicks. Whitney tallied eight saves in the game, all coming in the second frame as she notched her eighth win.
