Women's Soccer Falls to Bloomsburg, 2-1

September 14, 2011

Bloomsburg, Pa. – Senior Taylor Suskie scored on a penalty kick in the second period to tie the game at one a piece. Bloomsburg found a response nine minutes later to escape with a 2-1 victory at home on Wednesday.

The Huskies (3-1, 2-1 PSAC) controlled the opening half in the offensive zone, holding a 7-4 shot margin over the Marauders. Millersville goalkeeper Laura Reed kept the game scoreless for much of the first with three saves.

In the 44th minute, Bloomsburg’s Tara Huber broke the scoring drought. Caroline Mountney fed Huber a through pass up the middle of the box. Huber buried the ball in the top-left corner to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The Millersville women’s soccer team had gone 60 complete games without a penalty kick attempt until the 65th minute of Wednesday’s contest. Suskie was awarded the penalty kick on a foul by a Bloomsburg defender that stopped a scoring chance. Suskie’s kick was good and knotted the game at 1-1.

The last Millersville penalty kick attempt was on Oct. 1, 2007, when Stephanie Mellot scored to tie the game against Edinboro at one a piece. The Marauders eventually lost that game to the Fighting Scots by a score of 2-1.

Bloomsburg recaptured the lead in the 74th minute when Natalie Adams cleaned up an erred pass from Jamie Vaniver and put it past Millersville’s Reed to go up, 2-1.

The Marauders were unable to find a second answer before time ran out. The Huskies outshot Millersville 14-11 in regulation. Millersville’s Reed finished the game with a season-high six saves.

The Warriors of East Stroudsburg travel to Millersville to take on the Marauders Saturday, Sept. 17. Millersville and the Warriors are this week’s Subway Game of the Week. The game is slated for 3:30 p.m.
