ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team (0-4-1) surrendered a goal in each half to Syracuse University (2-1-1) to drop a 2-0 decision to the Orange on Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.

Syracuse applied much of the pressure early on, but the Bonnies were able to fend off the attack until the 38th minute when Kari Quinn's header snuck just inside the left post to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. Quinn received a long throw-in from Taylor Haenlin about six yards in front of the net and deposited her first goal of the season.

"We need some people to take leadership in the box and be more organized," head coach Manoj Khettry said of his team allowing a set-piece goal for the fourth game out of five contests this year. "We have enough capable players in the air to deal with those kinds of balls … it was one of the few miscues we had and unfortunately it led to a goal."

The Orange added an insurance tally in the 59th minute off an unassisted volley from Hanna Strong into the right side of the net. The goal was the second of her campaign and represented the fourth time this year Khettry's young squad has allowed multiple goals in a game. Last year combined over its 20 games, SBU allowed two or more goals in a game on four occasions.

"I told them that if we were better than 4-5-1, that would be a pretty good non-conference result," Khettry said of his demanding non-league ledger which has already included games against three BCS programs, a nationally ranked team and another club Receiving Votes in the national poll. "I think the key is that we have to play our way. When we do play our way we get chances, and I saw that today. When we were able to possess, keep the ball on the floor and play to feet, we were able to generate some real chances."

Those chances stirred SU keeper Brittany Anghel a couple times on the afternoon, but the junior needed to make just two saves to earn her first shutout of the season. In total, the Bonnies attempted five shots, with freshman Lauren Hill and reserve Nicole Rosso each putting a shot on frame.

Freshman Christina Sarokon made her third straight start in net for the Brown and White and was tested more than she has been all year, making a season-high 11 saves, including seven in the opening 45 minutes.

St. Bonaventure concludes its four-game homestand on Sunday when it welcomes the Bucknell Bison to McGraw-Jennings Field for a 3 p.m. start. The Bonnies have claimed each of the last two meetings against the Bison, including last year's season opener in Lewisburg, 1-0.

"We have to score the first goal of the game and not chase the game," Khettry surmised as what would give his team the best chance to pick up its first win of the season on Sunday. "I think that would do wonders for a young team."

GAME NOTES: Syracuse attempted 17 shots … 13 of those were on net … junior Jordan Calabria played 80 minutes and attempted one shot in her first game back since the season opener at Marquette on Aug. 16 … the Bonnies committed 11 fouls compared with Syracuse's seven … SBU could produce just one corner, while the Orange had five ... several St. Bonaventure women's soccer alumni were part of the 212 in attendance.
