Women's Soccer Plays Merrimack to a 0-0 Tie

North Andover, MA – Earlier this evening, the women's soccer team took to the road for a Northeast-10 Conference contest against the Warriors of Merrimack College. The showdown ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie after either side failed to net the game winner. With the tie, the Panthers move to 9-4-3, 6-4-3 NE-10 while the Warriors move to 9-6-1, 7-5-1 NE-10.
 
The Panthers jumped out to an aggressive start, rattling off five shots in the opening 5:10. Alison Gronenthal's took the first attempt but was blocked. However, Kaitlin Monteith and Taylor Groth were quick to test the keeper as their shots were on goal, but were both met with saves Nicole Curtis.
 
Additionally, within that span, Emily Masiello sent in all three of Adelphi's five total first half corner attempts, but was unsuccessful on each.
 
It was not until the 20th and 21st minutes where the hosts finally put a shot on net. Katie Brescani and Jenna Zechner both fired shots at the Panther goal, but keeper Sam Whitney stood strong and recorded two of her four first half saves.
 
At the end of 45 minutes of play, the Panthers had nine shots, four on goal while their counterparts registered seven with four on goal as well.
 
In the second, Merrimack took control of the game and ramped up their offensive attack as shown by their 11 shots. However, only one of them was on goal compared to the Panther's two shots, one of which was on the mark.
 
After regulation ended, the first of two overtime periods got underway. Masiello and Monteith registered the only shots of the period, but both were off the mark.
 
In the second overtime period, Jordan Schnopp and Donna Liotine exchanged the only attempts on net, but both were met with saves as the 110th minute hit with the scoreboard still reading 0-0.
 
The Panthers were outshot 19-16 but had a 7-4 corner advantage. Whitney and her opposing counterpart each made six saves in the draw.
 
Adelphi women's soccer is back in action on Wednesday, October 24 when they have their final road game of the regular season in Springfield, MA for a NE-10 matchup against American International College at 7pm. Live stats can be found here while a live video feed is also available.
