Garden City, N.Y. – The women's soccer team took on the Bears of NYIT earlier tonight in a non-conference contest. The Brown and Gold jumped out to what would prove to be an insurmountable lead with three goals in the first half, and tacked on another two in the second to take a 5-0 victory. With the win, Adelphi advances to 3-0 while the Bears continue to search for their first win with an 0-3 record.

Right off the bat, the Panthers came out aggressive on the offensive end, controlling the ball in the midfield. In the eighth minute, they seemingly put the first goal in on a textbook cross from Kaitlin Monteith, connecting with Alison Gronenthal who tapped it in, but was called off due to offsides.

NYIT fired back with a near score of their own just eight minutes later when Wendy Avendano streaked down the right side and lofted a soft shot toward the left to beat keeper Sam Whitney, but Meghan Carey was there to back her up and kick it out and save the goal.

The Brown and Gold had a handful of opportunities throughout the first half, and capitalized on three of them. The first came in the 26th minute when Gronenthal sent a pass from midfield to Monteith. The senior tri-captain got behind the Bear back line and found herself one on one with the keeper and tapped the ball in toward the left side of the net for the first goal of the game and her third of the season.

In the 43rd minute, Amanda Reverberi was the catalyst for two Panther goals within 31 seconds of each other. The first came on a pass that found Aimee Goldstein who fired a rocket from the top of the box to hit the top left shelf, giving the Panthers a two goal cushion. The second came off the foot of Monteith once again who mailed a shot from the right side, across the net to hit inside the left post for her second goal of the game and sending the Panthers into halftime with a comfortable 3-0 advantage.

In the second, the Panthers kept the pressure on the offensive end while staying sharp on the defensive end of the field as well. Freshman Olivia Czavar started the second half and wasted no time putting NYIT keeper Brianna Bollettieri to the test with four shots early on.

After a handful of close encounters, the Panthers put the nail in the coffin in the 80th minute when Michelle Brown sent a low cross from the right side to find Donna Liotine. The Medford, N.Y. native, who recorded a hat trick in the first game of the season, hit her mark to record her fourth goal of the season and the fourth of the game.

In the final seconds, Czavar tacked on the first goal of her freshman career after picking up a loose ball in front of the net and finding the back of the net to close the books on the 5-0 victory.

Whitney made two saves in the win. Adelphi outshot NYIT 21-6 but were even on corner kicks with two apiece.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, September 8 when they hit the road for their first conference matchup against the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire at 1 pm.
