Women’s Soccer: Great Falls Scores 7-1 Win over ACU

Phoenix, Ariz. – University of Great Falls (Mont.) exploded for five goals in the second half of a 7-1 intercollegiate women’s soccer victory over Arizona Christian University, Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix.

 

The Firestorm plays against Marymount College from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., Friday, October 21, at 7 p.m., with the ACU men’s soccer team playing Marymount at 5 p.m.

 

The Lady Argos scored their first two goals in a span of nearly 12 minutes in the first half, but ACU’s freshman phenom, forward Chelsea Ruland (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy), ACU’s single-season and career goals leader with 10, sliced UGF’s lead to 2-1 early in the second half on a breakaway goal.  Ruland’s goal came on ACU’s first and only shot on goal, and she also attempted the Firestorm’s other shot at 64:09, sending the ball high and wide of its mark.  However, UGF followed with five goals in a span of 17 minutes for its final 7-1 margin.

 

Great Falls, now 4-7-1 this season, outshot ACU, 32-2, overall and 19-1 in shots on goal, and led 6-1 in corner kicks.  Senior midfielder Ashly Pezel assisted on UGF’s second goal of the match, scored by senior midfielder Jenell Jackson at 28:56 of the first half, and scored its third and fourth goals at 63:28 and 64:46, and senior midfielder Yesenia Ocampo tallied goals at 67:10 and 78:07, giving the Argos a 6-1 lead.  Freshman forward Kelsey Reehill began UGF’s scoring at 17:14 and assisted on Ocampo’s first second-half goal, and freshman midfielder Chelsea Roughsedge completed UGF’s scoring with a 25-yard bullet with 10 minutes left to play.

 

ACU’s freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Arias-Castro (Tolleson, Ariz./La Joya Community H.S.) saved 12 shots and has saved 115 shots in 11 matches this season with 10 or more saves in seven matches.  UGF goalkeeper Jocelyn Morris recorded no saves.
