Wooster squeaks past Wilmington

September 11, 2011
09/11/11 WOOSTER — Wilmington College dropped a 1-0 decision to Wooster in non-conference women’s soccer action on the Scots’ pitch Sunday afternoon. The Quakers are now 1-2-2 on the season. Wooster improves to 3-2-0. “It was a hard-fought game,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “We had some very good chances, but couldn’t find their goal.” The start of the game was delayed an hour by lightning in the Wooster area. When play did get under way, Wooster offered the day’s final bolt of lightning in the form of an Erin Davison goal in the 20th minute. “That was a tough goal. There was kind of a scrum in front of our net and some contact. It was disappointing to lose a game against a quality opponent like Wooster on a goal of that nature,” Spirk said. Opportunities weren’t widespread, but both teams had additional scoring chances. Wilmington put five of its six shots on frame while Wooster framed five of 12. “Wooster is the defending regular-season champion of the North Coast Athletic Conference. You get better by playing those kinds of teams. It gets you battle-ready for further down the season in the OAC,” Spirk said. “But you still want to win these games. We’re pleased with the effort and the intensity, but at the same time we’re disappointed we didn’t win.” Junior goalkeeper Abbey Williamson (Grove City/Bishop Ready) went the distance and stopped four shots on goal. “Abbey had a solid game. She made some big-time saves,” Spirk said. “I thought our defense played really well. Even though they put a lot of pressure on us, I think our defense did a good job of responding to that pressure.” Wilmington will see another NCAC toughie when Ohio Wesleyan visits Charlie Gilhart Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff Wednesday. “We have all the top teams in the North Coast. We know that opponents like this will get us ready for the battles ahead. Hopefully, we’re learning something from it,” Spirk said.
