Wyoming Soccer Travels to Nevada before Senior Day on Sunday

UW carries a four-match unbeaten streak into the weekend

 

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 23, 2013) – The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team will travel to Reno, Nev., on Friday for an 8 p.m. MT contest with Nevada before returning home for Senior Day against the UNLV Rebels on Sunday with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. Prior to the start on Sunday, Wyoming will honor seniors Lucie McDowell, Olivia Mohtadi and Liz O’Reilly.

The Cowgirls (7-8-2, 4-2-1 Mountain West) are currently on a four-match unbeaten streak, the longest since winning six straight last season. UW has gone 3-0-1 during the stretch of its most recent home stand. Last weekend, Wyoming battled Fresno State to a 0-0 draw before beating San Jose State 1-0. McDowell, assisted by junior Sara Paul, scored early in the second half against the Spartans for the lone goal of the match. Wyoming leads the MW with 26 goals and is second with 68 points, one behind leader San Diego State.

With three conference games remaining, Wyoming is in fifth place in the Mountain West standings with 13 points and a 4-2-1 record, trailing Utah State with 15 points and a 5-2-0 mark. UW is led by McDowell who has combined for 18 total points, scoring eight goals and assisting on two others. Paul has also had an excellent season adding 13 points, with three goals and a team-leading seven assists which also leads the MW. Junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm has played all 17 games recording a goals-against average of 1.34, 65 saves and four shutouts. So far for the 2013 season, the Cowgirls have outscored (26-24) and outshot (196-182) their opponents.

Nevada (4-9-3, 2-5 MW) dropped a pair of matches last weekend by falling to New Mexico 3-2 and San Diego State 2-1. Junior forward Bobby Reilly leads the Wolf Pack with three goals and seven points, as freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos is second in the MW with 83 saves. Nevada owns a 2-3 record at home.

On Sunday, the Cowgirls will welcome the UNLV Rebels for Senior Day. It will be the final home game for three senior Cowgirls. McDowell leads the team in goals and total points. Mohtadi has battled injuries as of late, but has recorded one goal and assist on the year. O’Reilly is second on the team with four assists in addition to two scores in 2013.

UNLV (7-8-2, 2-5 MW) fell to San Diego State 3-0 and New Mexico 1-0 last weekend. Senior Jenn Wolfe is the team leader with five goals and 14 points, while senior keeper Kylie Wassell has 69 saves protecting goal for the Rebels. UNLV has a 3-7-1 record on the road this season.

The Cowgirls are 1-1 all-time against the Wolf Pack and 3-11-3 against the Rebels. The last outing against Nevada was a 1-0 loss for the Cowgirls last year. Nevada scored with seven minutes remaining to steal the victory. On Sept. 29 of last season, UNLV and Wyoming battled to a 0-0 draw.
