Yurko named America East Rookie of the Week

September 9, 2013

Cambridge, Mass. - Freshman Leah Yurko (Cumberland, Md.) of the Stony Brook women's soccer team was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, as announced by the conference office. The third Seawolf to garner conference weekly honors this season, Yurko scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's 3-1 win over Siena.

With the match tied 1-1 late in the second half, Yurko chased down a long pass from senior Ahriel Fernandez (East Haven, Conn.) and headed it over the Siena keeper to put Stony Brook ahead, 2-1, in the 73rd minute. Fellow freshman Lindsay Hutchinson (Millersville, Pa.) then added an insurance tally four minutes later to extend the lead and give the Seawolves some breathing room on the scoreboard.

Yurko was one of three Seawolves to net their first collegiate goal on Sunday. Sophomore Danielle Fuller (Staten Island, N.Y.) notched her first goal in a Stony Brook uniform in the first half, while Yurko and Hutchinson opened their collegiate accounts in the second stanza. Fernandez and freshman Hannah Groth (Cedarburg, Wis.) also posted their first collegiate points with an assist each.

Stony Brook has now been honored in the America East weekly awards in all three weeks of the season. Sophomore Stella Norman (Lakewood, Colo.) was named the conference Player of the Week on Aug. 26, while freshmanMaxie New (Clayton, N.J.) took home Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 3.

The Seawolves (4-1-1) will return to action Thursday against Wagner. Kickoff from LaValle Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
