Zardes’ Second Straight Hat Trick Leads CSUB Past San Francisco 3-1
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--Gyasi Zardes (R-So., Hawthorne, Calif., Leuzinger HS) recorded his second hat trick in as many matches as CSU Bakersfield (2-0) defeated the University of San Francisco (0-2) 3-1 Thursday night at Negoesco Stadium.
Zardes opened the scoring in the 16th minute when his shot went in from 10 yards. Jesus Sanchez (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Castle Park HS) earned the assist on the play. Mauric Diaz de leon tied the match at 48:45 when put back a deflection off of Miguel Aguilar. Zardes broke the tie at the 58:12 mark when blasted a shot past Jojo Vitale from 10 yards. He scored the match’s final goal a little over seven minutes later when connected from 10 yards out on the near side.
“That was the best hat trick I have seen in my 25 years of college soccer,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “We are seeing an athlete (Zardes) who is at the top of his game and is at a different level right now.”
CSUB is off until Sunday, Sept. 11 when the Roadrunners travel to UC Davis for a 4 p.m. start.
