Creighton women draw with North Dakota State
September 8, 2010
OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer team came into the match tonight with North Dakota State aiming to get its first win at home this season. The Jays battled to put the match into double overtime, but just couldn't net the winning goal, leaving the match tied 2-2. The tie puts the Jays at 2-2-2 overall this season, and 0-2-1 at Morrison Stadium.
The Jays got on the board first when Lauren Cingoranelli took a feed from Emily Orbell just outside the 18 yard box and buried it in the lower right corner, just six minutes into the net. The goal is Cingoranelli’s second on the season and it is Orbell’s third assist on the season.
“I thought we obviously had the ideal start,” Coach Bruce Erickson said. “We dictated the pace, scored a good early goal and were physical. Unfortunately at about 10 minutes we coasted and quit doing those things.”
The Bison answered back seven minutes later on one of their five first half corner kicks. Michelle Gaffaney was in the right place at the right time and put a ball past the back line from a Abbey Stratton corner. The Bison scored again in the half in the 24th minute when Quin Ryan scored her second of the season on a pass from Katie Tallas.
Creighton took three shots in the first half, with two on goal, while North Dakota State took five shots and three on goal. The Jays had one corner kick against the five of North Dakota State.
The second half was a very physical battle with neither team scoring for the first 20 minutes of the half. North Dakota State had a dead ball shot blocked and then Creighton goalkeeper Katie Jo Swanson pounced on the rebound shot to keep the lead at just one. Swanson also jumped on a one-on-one breakaway later in the half, saving yet another Bison scoring chance.
The Jays tied up the match in the 77th minute when Erin Gunther sent a ball down the near sideline that Brittney Neumann took across the baseline and rocketed toward the keeper. The ball bounced off the hands of the Bison goalkeeper and into the net. It is Neumann’s second goal of the season and Gunther’s second assist.
Through regulation, the Jays and Bison each recorded four shots on goal, with Creighton taking eight shots and North Dakota State taking 11. Swanson recorded two saves, allowing her first two goals of the season. Creighton had four corner kicks in the second period, including one in the last 10 seconds providing a scoring chance for the Jays. Gunther put the ball in play, only to have it kicked out to half by a Bison defender.
In overtime, Creighton took just two shots, one which was on goal, while North Dakota State took six shots, two on goal. Swanson ended the night with four saves.
“We came back and responded well in the second half, but obviously it was disappointing not getting the win,” said Erickson. “We were playing for the win and it was frustrating when they were seemingly playing for the tie, trying to stall with subs. A win would have been nice.”
The Jays play again on Thursday, September 9 when they travel to the University of South Dakota to take on the Coyotes.
