HS: Winter region, state rankings, Feb. 16
A pair of mild state tournament surprises in Arizona resulted in new No. 1s in the state and West Region this week, highlighting a number of changes around the country.
Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.) inherits the California-South No. 1 ranking following a loss by Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.). McKinney Boyd (McKinney, Texas) takes over the top ranking in Texas-North after current region No. 2 Coppell (Coppell, Texas) routed former No. 1 Colleyville Heritage (Colleyville, Texas) in league play last week.
Chandler (Chandler, Ariz.) won the Arizona Division I, which secured the state and region top ranking for a team that went into the week at No. 2 in rankings.
On the girls side, Highland (Gilbert, Ariz.) took top honors in Arizona's Division I bracket, which nailed down a state No. 1 for this perennial state-ranked program. Highland's win pushes [Iolani School hi-w] (Honolulu, Hawaii) into the No. 1 spot in the West.
In addition, the revolving door on the California-South rankings sees Aliso Niguel (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) back in the top spot.
