HS: Winter region, state rankings, Jan. 19
While the Texas public schools completed its second week of play, girls programs in Florida started postseason play, and the results from both states led to several changes in the rankings this week.
The big movers include Colleyville Heritage (Colleyville, Texas) on the boys side after it won the Kyle Fritz Memorial Cup title; St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) after it claimed a 30th straight district title and undefeated Sachse (Sachse, Texas) girls, which tied former SIMA FAB 50 No. 3 Coppell in a battle of undefeated teams.
This week marks the first "season complete" among the ranked teams, as the boys and girls programs at Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) both wrapped up undefeated seasons to secure top rankings in the Florida-Sorth region rankings. The varsity teams at the boarding school combined for a 40-0-1 showing this winter. The boys wino all 21 matches, while the girls won their last 19 after starting the season with a tie.
BOYS
Rivera (Brownsville, Texas) won its bracket at the Brownsville ISD Tournament, scoring an eye-popping 31 goals in four matches. The team's 6-1 win over McAllen (McAllen, Texas) was its closest match.
GIRLS
Round 2 went to St. Thomas Aquinas, which handed Cypress Bay (Cypress Bay, Fla.) its first defeat of the season. The Raiders improved to 19-1-1, while Cypress Bay, which won the first meeting between the teams, is 19-1. Both teams advance to this week's region playoffs and could meet again with a state tournament berth on the line.
