HS: Spring state, region rankings, May 7
Just when it looked like teams were playing themselves into order following a series of regional and national tournaments, the rankings took a hit with a slew of surprises last week.
On the boys side, the co-favorites -- Norcross and Walton -- in Georgia's Class 7-A, the large-school bracket, both bowed out of the playoffs before the state semifinals. Enterprise (Ala.), Dalton (Ga.) and Deer Creek (Okla.) also made early playoff exits.
On the girls side, the carnage wasn't reserved to postseason play. In the Kansas City area, Lee's Summit West (Mo.) and Blue Valley West (Kan.) were both upset, resulting in a fall in this week's state and region rankings. Fairview (Colo.), Barrington (Ill.), West Des Moines Valley (Iowa) and Elkhorn South (Neb.) were upset, which led to more overhaul in state and region rankings.
The rash of surprises allow McCallie School (Tenn.) boys to regain the No. 1 spot in the Southeast region, marking the only new regional No. 1 this week.
