HS: Tompkins, St. Agnes win I-10 titles
Weather won the day in North Texas as several events were shortened, altered or simply canceled due to inclement weather.
But the I-10 Showcase for girls went off without a hitch.
The 64-team event, broken into eight eight-team brackets, features most of the Houston-area powers, and this year's event lived up to the hype. In the Falcon Bracket, Tompkins (Texas) edged McAllen (Texas) 1-0 in a clash of what was the No. 2 and 3-ranked teams in the state. The win allows Tompkins to remain No. 2 in Texas and poised to move up a spot in the next SIMA FAB 50. St. Agnes Academy (Texas) followed up its strong showing at NEPS with a Cougar Bracket title. George Ranch (Texas) was a surprise champ in the Spartan Bracket, where it upended favored Houston Memorial (Texas) in the semifinals before beating Seven Lakes (Texas) in the final.
Outside of the usual early season Texas shuffle, the rankings remain largely unchanged.
The state No. 1s are Sunnyside (Ariz.), Montgomery (Calif.), Doral Academy (Fla.), Punahou (Hawaii), St. Paul's (La.), Northwest Rankin (Miss.) and San Antonio LEE (Texas) for boys and Hamilton (Ariz.), Monte Vista (Calif.), Montverde Academy (Fla.), Kamehameha-Kapalama (Hawaii), Northshore (La.), Gulfport (Miss.) and Coppell (Texas) for girls.
