HS: Weekend wrap, region rankings, June 10
Lacey McCormack cemented her place among Virginia's high school greats, scoring five goals over the weekend and leading Yorktown (Va.) to a second state title in three seasons.
The results locked up the state and region No. 1 ranking for the Patriots, which finished 24-0-1 and remain in the hunt for the FAB 50 national title.
McCormack, for has committed to Virginia, netted three goals in the team's 4-0 thrashing of Kellam (Va.) in a rain-soaked state semifinal contest. The senior then scored both goals in Yorktown's 2-0 state final win over T.C. Williams (Va.), which entered the contest 22-0.
On the boys side in Virginia South Lakes (Va.) won the 6A crown to inch up to No. 1 in the state and region, while Charlottesville (Va.) took out a pair of previously undefeated teams -- Jamestown (Va.) and Chancellor (Va.) -- to claim the 4A title and the final state and region No. 2 ranking.
Iowa was the only other state that crowned champions over the weekend, and the top state honors ended up with Assumption (Iowa), which finished 20-1 and outscored its opponents 115-5 this season.
