HS: Weekend wrap, regional rankings, June 3
Heading into the Super-Sectionals, the top four-ranked teams in Illinois were all on the same side of quarterfinal draw, meaning only one could survive to reach the state final.
And, as is so often the case, a team on the other half of the playoff draw ended up winning the entire event.
Naperville North (Naperville, Ill.) pulled off the stunner, defeating top-ranked Barrington (Ill.) in a shootout in the Class 3A girls final.
In some ways, the outcome was not that big of a surprise. Napersville North was the No. 3 team in the TopDrawerSoccer preseason state rankings, Barrington was No. 1. But a five-loss regular season bounced Naperville North from the upper tier of ranked teams. Through the playoffs, Naperville North avenged allof its losses, either directly or by extension (i.e. beating the team that had ousted a team Naperville North had lost to during the season). It all adds up to Naperville North jumping to No. 1 in the final Illinois state rankings and No. 2 in the region.
