Knocking off one nationally ranked team could be viewed as an upset.

But three in a row?

That’s what the boys soccer team at Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.) did this past weekend to put off a surprise title at the inaugural Lotto Sport Western Showcase at San Clemente High School.

Buchanan opened the eight-team event with a win over defending CIF section and region champion Loyola (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1-0; then upended last week’s SIMA FAB 50 No. 2 Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) in the semifinals and capped the run with a 3-1 victory over defending Arizona state champion Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.).

The results vaults Buchanan to No. 3 in this week’s California-South region rankings.

Servite won the third-place match over San Clemente (Calif.); with Loyola taking the fifth-place match over Century (Anaheim, Calif.).

In other interesting outcomes last week, [St. John's Country Day fl-w] (Orange Park, Fla.) saw its girls soccer undefeated streak halted at 57 matches with a 3-0 loss to [Bolles (Jacksonville) fl-w] (Jacksonville, Fla.). The outcome drops SJCD from the No. 1 spot in the Florida-North region rankings. Up-and-coming Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.), a recent winner over Bolles, now moves into the top spot in the region.

In California, the battle for state and national girls No. 1 tightens as SIMA FAB 50-top-ranked and California-South No. 1 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.) won five matches last week, three over nationally ranked opponents; while FAB 50 No. 2 Monte Vista (Danville, Calif.) won the Tri-Valley Classic for the second straight year.
