HS: Winter region, state rankings, Jan. 5
There's a reason we take a one-week winter high school rankings break during the holiday season — hardly any teams play.
Sure, a few major events impact the state, region — and ultimately SIMA FAB 50 rankings, but largely there is no high school action between December 22 and the New Year. Texas private schools and all Florida teams basically shut down for three weeks. Most NorCal programs have been idle since Dec. 22. Texas public schools still have yet to play regular-season matches. Outside of the Arizona Showcase and Excalibur events for girls and the SoCal High School Classic for boys, very few teams in Arizona, California and Hawaii compete in the second half of December.
Therefore, there are not many changes in this week's rankings -- outside of Southern California. In fact, there were were only two changes at No. 1 among the 16 boys and girls winter season regions. The changes that occured as a result of Excalibur and the SoCal High School Classic basically were the same teams from Dec. 22 just swapping spots based on last week's tournament results.
That said, there were a few big winners over the holidays:
BOYS
Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.) bounced back from a mid-December loss by avenging a defeat to Paramount (Paramount, Calif.) and winning the SoCal High School Classic — National Showcase. The win moves this former California Top 5 team back up to No. 2 in the California-South rankings, and No. 3 in California.
GIRLS
Tesoro, which was a Top 20 California-South team on December 22, vaults to No. 4 this week after winning Excalibur, which featured top teams from Southern Caiifornia and Arizona.
