HS: Winter state, region rankings, Dec. 24
A pair of Los Angeles powers flexed their muscle last week.
Loyola (Calif.) and Cathedral, both CIF Southern Section programs from talent-heavy Los Angeles, won weekend showcase events to reinforce their lofty state, regional and national rankings.
Loyola edged Santa Barbara (Calif.) 1-0 to win the South Torrance Holiday Tournament to stay No. 1 in the state and region. Cathedral edged Servite (Calif.) 1-0 in overtime in the Lotto Sport Western Showcase final, which featured programs from three states.
The big news from last week, however, happened in Florida, where Montverde Academy (Fla.) lost for the first time in nine years, halting the program's national record undefeated streak at 185 matches. The result bumped Montverde from the No. 1 spot in the Florida state rankings and takes the team out of the running for FAB 50 No. 1 for the time being.
On the girls side, a loss by Monte Vista (Calif.) ends the Mustangs' run at region No. 1 and state and FAB 50 No. 2. Davis (Calif.) inherits the California-North top ranking.
Davis is the only new regional No. 1 team this week, as the othre 15 regional No. 1s held their ranking for at least another week.
