HS: Winter state, region rankings, Feb. 26
Postseason has a funny way of undoing all that was logical during the regular season.
In San Diego, the Nos. 1, 2, 3 girls seeds were bounced in the first round of the Open Tournament. There was similar carnage in the boys playoffs. In Florida, a heavily favored and undefeated defending girls champ was shut out in the state final. In Louisiana, a boys team going for a fifth straight title was stunned in OT by its rival, a team it had twice defeated during the regular season. In California's Southern Section -- well, let's just say, it was more of the same with several projected favorites collecting jerseys this week instead of medals.
While details of the above will be used Tuesday to explain the new-look FAB 50 rankings, there were some weekened successes by state and region No. 1 teams.
St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park, Fla.) girls secured a seventh straight state title, winning its 70th straight match, to lock down its state and regional No. 1 ranking. Monte Vista (Danville, Calif.) delivered a title in a loaded CIF-North Coast Section Division 1 field. American Heritage-Plantation (Plantation, Fla.) and American Heritage-Delray (Delray Beach, Fla.) made it a school sweep of state titles and the No. 1 and 2 spots in the Florida-South regional rankings.
