HS: Winter state, region rankings, Jan. 18
The No. 1 team changed in three boys and two girls regions this week, many of the changes sparked by early season tournaments in Texas.
Here's a look at some of the week's big winners:
BOYS
Plano West (Plano, Texas) takes over the Texas state and Texas-North region No. 1 spot without playing. The Wolves were No. 1 last week, but a pair of losses by the former No. 1 and a tie by the former No. 2 resulted in a swap of positions.
Belen Jesuit (Miami, Fla.), like Plano West, moves into a No. 1 ranking without playing. A tie by the Florida-South former No. 1 team allowed Belen, the top-ranked team in Miami, to move into the No. 1 ranking.
Cathedral (Los Angeles, Calif.) flips spots with Paramount following Cathedral's strong showing at the Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament. The Phantoms posted three straight shutouts and pushed top-ranked Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) to a shootout, before losing in PKs Cathedral finished third at the event.
GIRLS
Marcus (Flower Mound, Texas) moves from No. 2 to No. 1 in both the Texas-North and Texas state rankings after No. 1 Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas) was toppled last week.
